Bathing, Dressing and Grooming Help in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
The most dangerous room in the house and the least welcome help of the week, handled slowly by somebody who was in that same bathroom last Tuesday.
Why the room is the problem
Soaked tiles, a bath rim to climb over, and a body that no longer rights itself in time. Put those three together and more bad falls happen here than anywhere else indoors — in the one room a family can supervise least.
None of it is difficult work. What it asks for is somebody who will not hurry: warm the room first, put everything in reach, and raise no ceremony over the parts that have stopped being manageable without help.
That is temperament, not training, and no duty roster will reveal it. Sixty minutes in somebody's living room will, and that is how every aide here gets met before a booking exists.
This is rarely bought by itself. It usually sits inside a longer morning visit, which is the sensible arrangement: the aide is already there and the room is already warm.
Where a household wants only this, a short visit can be arranged, subject to the minimum length discussed on the first call.
What the half hour holds
Prepared, done and tidied away again, and normally inside the half hour.
The room prepared first
Warm, dry underfoot, towels and clothing within arm's reach before a button is undone.
Shower, bath or a seated wash
Whichever is genuinely safe on the day, not whichever was written down last month.
Hair, shaving, teeth
Finished properly rather than dropped because the shower overran.
Dressing in their own choice
Chosen, laid out, and assisted only where a fastening has defeated somebody.
Skin given a proper look
Bruises, dry patches and the areas that take the pressure, all in view at that moment, and noted down if something has shifted.
Left dry behind them
Mats hung, water mopped, towels put back. Half of stopping the next fall happens once the shower is finished.
Not part of this visit
- Looking after a wound or changing a dressing
- Washes that a clinician has prescribed
- Nails on the feet, where diabetes or circulation is in play
- Hoist work that was not arranged and equipped first
- Hairdressing of any kind — a wash and a shave is the limit
- Anything the person says no to on the day
Knowing the face is the trick
It is the reason an aide is introduced in the sitting room weeks before they are ever in the bathroom.
