Companion Care in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

Nothing physical at all, which makes it both the cheapest hour here and the one somebody will accept while still insisting nothing is wrong.

An hour that buys information

There is a long stretch, often a couple of years, where a household plainly needs eyes on the situation and will accept no help with anything physical. Companion hours exist for exactly that stretch.

What they really purchase is a dependable weekly observation, made by somebody sensible, on terms the person involved will live with. The rest of the hour is entirely genuine and also beside the point.

Which means the match matters more here than anywhere else on this site. A poor match is survivable for a shower. An hour of obligatory conversation with somebody you dislike is not survivable at all.

Companion hours are frequently added to an existing visit rather than bought alone — an extra half hour on the end of a morning so the aide can sit down rather than leave the moment the washing-up is done.

Where nothing physical is needed yet, a single weekly visit on its own is a perfectly sensible purchase.

What the hour is made of

Straightforward company, with whatever small jobs sit comfortably alongside.

A conversation with continuity

Carried on from last week, which is only possible because the visitor does not change.

Eating at the same table

Two plates down at the same time. That is the whole difference between a meal served and a meal eaten.

Somewhere to be going

Round the block, into a shop, out for a coffee. Nothing elaborate, and it hands an otherwise formless week a landmark.

Whatever they already did

The garden, the crossword, a hand of cards, the programme they never miss. Nothing imported from an activities sheet.

Small help in passing

Drying up, opening the post, changing a bulb. A by-product of being there, never the reason.

Written down afterwards

Appetite, mood, how steady they seemed and the condition of the rooms — written up rather than mentioned on the way out.

Not part of these hours

  • Bathing, showering and getting dressed
  • Anything at the lavatory
  • Bearing somebody's weight as they walk
  • Medication of every description
  • Clinical tasks of any sort
  • Driving them anywhere at all

The cheapest useful hour

It is also the one that turns out, a year later, to have been what caught the problem.
